At the heart of the Penang Pharmacists Convention 2023 was a series of interactive workshops, a unique and pivotal component that set this event apart. These workshops provided delegates with hands-on opportunities to delve into the intricacies of various medical tools and equipment, enhancing their practical understanding and expertise. This year, the convention's focus was on respiratory health, with three immersive workshops that left attendees with a wealth of knowledge and practical skills.
We have a sleep apnea workshop, in this eye-opening session, delegates had the privilege of learning about sleep apnea from a seasoned lung clinic medical practitioner. But it didn't stop at theory; participants also had the unique opportunity to experience the usage of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines, a key strategy in addressing sleep apnea. By trying out the machines themselves, attendees gained a firsthand appreciation for the challenges faced by patients and the potential solutions offered by CPAP therapy.
While phlegm suction machines and nebulizers are readily available in most community pharmacies, the intricacies of their operation often remain a mystery to many. Practising Nurse Mr. Tan Kheng Kiat and Pharmacist Tang Shin Wei led this informative session, sharing essential procedures and tips for guiding patients in the proper use of phlegm suction devices and nebulizers. This hands-on workshop equipped pharmacists with the knowledge to assist patients more effectively.
Beyond pharmacotherapy, the third workshop explored the realm of lung physiotherapy and its role in improving lung function. Attendees gained insights into how physiotherapy techniques can complement traditional treatments, offering a more comprehensive approach to respiratory health. This workshop underscored the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
In this workshop, participants delved into the intricacies of nasal sprays, a commonly used over-the-counter medication.
