The Penang Pharmacists Symposium (PPS) 2024, themed "Dermatology Beyond Borders," concluded with resounding success on 19th and 20th October at City Bayview, Georgetown, Penang. Attended by over 230 pharmacists from across the region, the symposium solidified its reputation as one of the largest and most significant pharmaceutical gatherings in the region.

The symposium was officiated by a distinguished group of leaders including YB Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, Penang EXCO of Belia, Sukan Dan Kesihatan, Ms. Yeoh Ee Theng, Organizing Chairperson of Penang Pharmacists Symposium 2024, Puan Noraini Ab Kadir, Timbalan Pengarah Kesihatan Negeri (Farmasi), Ms. Sarah Binti Abdullah, President of Malaysian Community Pharmacy Guild, Mr. Andrew Tan Eng Joo, Council Member of Malaysian Pharmacists Society, Assoc. The two-day event showcased the growing importance of dermatology in pharmacy practice, emphasizing cross-border collaboration and innovative approaches to skincare and dermatological treatments. The theme, "Dermatology Beyond Borders," resonated throughout the sessions, which focused on global trends in dermatological care, personalized treatment strategies, and cutting-edge technologies for improving patient outcomes.

The symposium covered a range of topics, including the management of chronic skin conditions, the role of pharmacists in skincare consultations, and the latest advancements in dermal drug delivery systems.

Hand-on Sessions in Skincare and Treatment

The workshop sessions at PPS 2024 were designed to be interactive and hands-on, providing participants with practical skills and real-world applications.

During the Highlights session of this year’s Penang Pharmacists Symposium, a series of workshops targeting skincare brought cutting-edge insights to the participants. Leading the session was Dr. Goh Choon Fu, a renowned skin researcher and pharmacist, who guided attendees through the intricacies of Dermal Drug Delivery and Formulation, offering hands-on experience and expert knowledge on how topical treatments can be optimized for better therapeutic outcomes.

In another engaging segment, Ms. Nurul Shafaril Niza from MTAC Psoriasis, Penang General Hospital, shared her experiences managing psoriasis, a common yet challenging skin condition. She provided fellow pharmacists with a deep understanding of the rationale behind various treatment approaches, emphasizing the need for special care and precision in managing this chronic condition.

Ms. Lillian Tan from Rapha Compounding contributed valuable insights into the importance of personalizing medication, especially in the context of dermatology. She explained why compounded medications remain a vital part of modern pharmacy practice, addressing specific patient needs that off-the-shelf treatments may not fully cover.

Concluding the workshop was a presentation by a Wound Care Nurse Instructor from Remeds Homecare, who delved into the latest developments in wound care products. Her session focused on enhancing patient experiences and outcomes when dealing with wound care, providing practical strategies for improving care protocols and patient comfort.

The Penang Pharmacists Convention 2023 was a remarkable testament to the power of collaboration and unity within the pharmacy community. Spearheaded by the collaborative efforts of MPS Penang, MCPG Northern Branch, and MPS-YPC Penang, this event showcased the strength of working together toward a common goal—advancing pharmacy practice and knowledge.
